Principal's Message
Having
historical background, Charing is the birthplace of many eminent personalities
like historian, literateur and former presidents of Asom Sahitya Sabha Benudhar
Sarmah; Koka Nilamoni Phukon, Ratna Kanta Borkakoty, Jatindranath Duwarah, Sarbeswar
Rajguru and Nakul Chandra Bhuyan; former M.P. Ajit Kumar Sarmah. As a result of
the efforts of the elite persons of Charing, it is one of the few old colleges
of Upper Assam. Initially it was named as ‘Charing College’ and later on was
renamed as Swahid Maniram Dewan College, Charing (S.M.D. College) which named
after the greatest martyr of the first freedom movement (1857) of our nation Maniram Dewan. We celebrated Golden
Jubilee in the year 2015. As a result of the tireless effort of the college
fraternity, the only premier higher education institution of this locality, S.M.D.
College has turned into a progressive institution by imparting quality
education. The mission and vision of our college is to nurture today’s youth to
face tomorrow’s challenges and we have well complemented our motto of
‘nurturing tomorrow’s minds’ by gradually and successfully transitioning from
being ‘consumers of knowledge’ to ‘disseminator of knowledge’
The college has a canteen which provides quality controlled refreshment to the college students at a nominal price determined by the college authority.
Red Ribbon Club
There is a Red Ribbon club in the collge for awakening programmes and remedial measures for infectious disease. lt is conducted under the supervision of a teacher.
Sports Facility
The college has a good playground with necessary facilities for outdoor games and sporls like footLall and cricket. There are ample facilities for athletics and other minor games like carrom’ badminton’ volley ball etc.
Hostel Facility
The college provides hostel facilities for girls only.
