Dr. Rabi Kumar Jha, M.A., Ph.D
Having historical background, Charing is the birthplace of many eminent personalities like historian, literateur and former presidents of Asom Sahitya Sabha Benudhar Sarmah; Koka Nilamoni Phukon, Ratna Kanta Borkakoty, Jatindranath Duwarah, Sarbeswar Rajguru and Nakul Chandra Bhuyan; former M.P. Ajit Kumar Sarmah. As a result of the efforts of the elite persons of Charing, it is one of the few old colleges of Upper Assam. Initially it was named as ‘Charing College’ and later on was renamed as Swahid Maniram Dewan College, Charing (S.M.D. College) which named after the greatest martyr of the first freedom movement (1857) of our nation Maniram Dewan. We celebrated Golden Jubilee in the year 2015. As a result of the tireless effort of the college fraternity, the only premier higher education institution of this locality, S.M.D. College has turned into a progressive institution by imparting quality education. The mission and vision of our college is to nurture today’s youth to face tomorrow’s challenges and we have well complemented our motto of ‘nurturing tomorrow’s minds’ by gradually and successfully transitioning from being ‘consumers of knowledge’ to ‘disseminator of knowledge’
Established on 1st July, 1964, the college is situated in charming natural surroundings. The college is located at a 17 km away from district headquarter, i.e, Sivasagar town; 5 km away from historical Namdang Stone Bridge (NH-37) through Naga-Ali and only 3 km distant from Duwarah Ali (NH- 37).
Now the college is a full-fledged provincialised one imparting education in Arts stream only. There is the provision of distance learning programs under Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) both in undergraduate and postgraduate level. The college is well equipped with modern library with facilities of INFLIBNET, digital classrooms, well furnished conference hall, up to date Gym, computer laboratory, separate day houses both for boys and girls, well secured women hostel, canteen, Montessori day care centre for child of the fringe villages and with a team of qualified faculty, librarian and co-operative office staff.
