College Profile

Founded in 1964, on July 1, the enlightened educationists and visionary intellectuals of greater Charing area envisioned an idea of establishing a seat of higher education which will cater to the needs of the local people. It is one of the oldest colleges of Upper Assam. Beginning from the humble precincts of the Public Hall, the College today boasts of a spacious campus, state-of-the-art infrastructure and an esteemed faculty of scholars trained at leading universities in India.

At S.M.D, we believe in holistic education that goes beyond achieving academic excellence. Our philosophy is to realize the overall intellectual, creative, cultural and socio-political growth and development of both the students and the college community in its entirety. The College invites all students irrespective of gender, caste, religion and physical challenges to make us a rich and varied community. The College offers a wide range of courses, extra-curricular activities and technologically advanced facilities accessible to the faculty, the students and the support staff. Here, each individual is encouraged to step beyond the confines of academic and administrative disciplines to explore and intervene in the larger interests of the S.M.D Community that thrives on participation and the desire to venture into newer vistas.

Affiliated to the Dibrugarh University, the college is now a ful-grown single stream Arts college under provincialised system of the Govt. of 

Assam. It imparts under-graduate education in as many as nine different subjects offering major course in most of subjects introduced in the college.

         Translating the vision into action, S.M.D College seeks;

1. To give quality education that includes the imparting of sound learning, building of character, the spread of Truth and the knowledge of God.

2. To inculcate moral values, social commitment and dignity of labour among the youth through value education program
3. To develop in the students an attitude of reconciliation between man and nature which will help thembecome peace makers, defenders of the poor and keepers of the environment.

LOCATION

Located in the midst of rural surroundings on a sprawllng area of 65-odd bighas of land, the college is only about 4 km. south of the famous Namdang Stone Bridge, Gourisagar Dole along the historic NagaAli and about 2 km. east of N.H.37.

COLLEGE RULES


General rules for maintenance of discipline

1. a) The students admitted to the college must abide by all the rules and

regulations prescribed by the college authority’

b) No student shall be admitted to any class as aforesaid if he/she is found to

have indulged in activities detrimental to academic interest.

c) A student who is found to have indulged in consumption of drugs or

intoxicating drinks, gambling and other immoral activities shall be liable

to expulsion & further disciplinary action’

2. Violation of rules, indiscipline and misconduct of any kind may lead to disciplinary

actionlikecompulsorytransfer/expulsionfromthecollege.

3. College uniform is compulsory in the classrooms and college functions’

Students without uniform will not be allowed to attend their classes’

4. Students are expected to participate in all forms of college functions and

co-operate in keeping the college campus neat & clean’

Resistration

The students should register themselves under the Dibrugarh University


 

and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council respectively.

Attendance

A student should attend a minimum of 80% classes held during an academic year’


 

students whose attendance falls below 80% but renuins above 70% will be considered as noncollegiate,


 

students with attendance below 70% will be debarred from appearing in the final examination.


 
College Dress Code

Wearing of approved college uniform is compulsory both for boys and

 

girls.The uniform for boys is white shirt and navy blue trouser and that for girls is

 

Muga or Muga-coloured Mekhela white chadar with bottle green border and bottle

 

green blouse / White kurta and salwar with Green Dupatta for Girls (Leggingn’


Churidar and Sleeveless tops are not allowed)are made optional choice for girls. 

College Badge

Bonafide students are directed to wear the college badge issued to them

 

while coming to the college.

Identity Card

A non-transferable ldentity card is issued to each bonafide student at the


time of admission. For this, a passport size photograph is to be attached with the

 

admission form.
